Pargo de cuerpo alargado y potente, con flancos de franjas claras y oscuras formadas por el borde de las escamas; boca grande con parche dentario en V en el paladar. Juveniles usan estuarios; adultos forman cardúmenes sobre fondos duros de 0–70 m. Depredador carnívoro que se alimenta de peces e invertebrados. Muy apreciado por su pelea y por agregaciones ocasionales en medias aguas.
